Liverpool Set to Sign Jeremie Frimpong After Medical

Jeremie Frimpong is about to become Liverpool’s first signing this summer. The Dutch right-back is finishing his medical and will sign his contract today. Liverpool have paid the €35 million (£30 million) release clause to Bayern Leverkusen.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The 24-year-old arrived in England on Sunday. He is now completing his medical at Liverpool. Frimpong has agreed to a five-year deal and will earn around £100,000 per week. The transfer happened quickly after he told Leverkusen he wanted to join Liverpool. The Merseyside club then met his release clause to seal his transfer.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool have signed Frimpong as Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to leave in the summer when his contract expires. Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a free transfer to Real Madrid. New Liverpool head coach Arne Slot faces a rebuild after a remarkable campaign has taken the team towards Premier League title glory. Although they were knocked out of the Champions League by Arsenal in the semi-finals, a squad rebuild is expected under the manager. Frimpong is his first signing as Liverpool head coach.

Frimpong’s record

Frimpong is a player with experience of winning major silverware and impressed for Leverkusen this season. Playing regularly under Xabi Alonso, the attack-minded full-back racked up 46 appearances in all competitions, registering nine goals and eight assists. He helped Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal last season, while they also reached the UEFA Europa League final. Frimpong’s development continues after he opted to join Liverpool.

What happens next?

Liverpool fans will soon get the chance to watch Frimpong in action as he teams up with his new club. In his move to Merseyside, he may have to make early impressions in pre-season if he wishes to become Liverpool and Slot’s preferred choice at right-back next term. The club also have Conor Bradley in the position, with James McConnell returning from serious injury soon. This acquisition suggests the chance to compete for places at Liverpool. However, Frimpong may be considered to at least feature regularly to help the team defend their Premier League crown next season.
