Amorim Stays with Manchester United Despite Tough Season
Ruben Amorim says he will stay with Manchester United, even after they lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. He plans to remain as long as the club wants him.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Manchester United‘s manager, Ruben Amorim, has spoken about staying with the club despite a tough season. The Portuguese coach says joining United was a dream for him. His comments come after United lost 1-0 to Tottenham in the Europa League final. Brennan Johnson scored the goal that gave Spurs their first trophy in 17 years, earning them a spot in the Champions League for next season.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Amorim’s commitment comes during the club’s worst season in 51 years. Since he became manager in November, Amorim has only won six of 26 league games. The Red Devils are currently 16th in the Premier League and recently lost their 18th game of the season to Chelsea. Despite the difficulties, Amorim says he needs time for major changes at the club: “There are some things we cannot change in summer, the feeling in the club and the way we see it.”
AMORIM’S POSITION
While staying committed, Amorim also shows he’s willing to leave if necessary. After the Europa League final, he said he would go “without conversation or compensation” if the club wants to replace him. He believes he can fix the team’s issues by focusing on culture, not just transfers. Amorim acknowledges that United’s problems go beyond their players: “The way we work and the behaviour we have in the club, the things we cannot see, we are working on it.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?
Even after a disappointing season, United are planning summer transfers to fit Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system. Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha, with a £62.5 million price tag, is expected to be the first summer signing. Amorim also wants a new striker and has Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap as one of his main targets. The club must make key decisions regarding current players, such as Marcus Rashford, who is on loan at Aston Villa. United aim to rebuild their squad for the 2025/26 season and improve their Premier League standings.
