Tottenham Boss Commits to Keeping Star Defender Romero
Tottenham Hotspur’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, has said that keeping Cristian “Cuti” Romero is a priority. There’s been talk of transfers since Tottenham’s Europa League win, but the manager wants to keep Romero at the club.
ROMERO’S IMPORTANCE HIGHLIGHTED
The Australian manager has made it clear Romero needs to be part of the team’s future. He also praised Romero’s recent games, saying he’s played well despite a toe injury. The injury has meant Romero’s fitness has been limited, but he was very important to Tottenham in the final against Manchester United. The club won 1-0 and secured their first trophy in 17 years.
Talking after the game, Postecoglou said that Romero has the respect of all of his teammates for the way he leads. His praise showed Romero is a very important player in the squad. Romero wore the captain’s armband during the final, confirming his status as one of Tottenham’s leaders. He shares that role with Son Heung Min, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario.
TRANSFER SPECULATION INTENSIFIES
Transfer talk surrounding Romero has increased, though. The 27-year-old defender has impressed both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, who could both be lining up summer moves. But signing Romero won’t be easy for either team. The player has a contract until 2027, meaning he couldn’t leave for another club for at least two years. Tottenham would demand at least €50 million for the Argentina international, according to reports.
Romero has not said yet if he will stay at Spurs or not. After the Europa League win, he hinted at a possible exit. “It was a brutal season. We silenced everyone… and we did it with a trophy. I always gave everything for this badge,” Romero said. Some people watching also thought his celebrations at full-time could be a goodbye.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RETURN SECURED
In winning the Europa League, Tottenham have secured a spot in next season’s Champions League. That achievement might persuade Romero to stay, and it is a big boost for Postecoglou. He led the team to that success even while finishing down in 17th in the Premier League.
That finish, avoiding relegation only on goal difference, proves the importance of this European title. It helped bring 150,000 Tottenham fans out for a parade celebrating the trophy, and Postecoglou again used his chance to speak to hit back at people who doubted him. “I told them and they laughed. I told them and they didn’t believe. But here we are,” he said.
Playing in next season’s Champions League helps Tottenham in their bid to keep stars like Romero. If they can keep him, they can build on this season’s success in Europe, while working to improve domestically next season. That will surely be the aim for Postecoglou and his coaching staff.
