Max Allegri Returns as AC Milan Head Coach

AC Milan have hired Massimiliano Allegri as their new head coach. He signed a two-year contract with an option for a third year. This marks his return to the club 11 years after he last managed them.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Allegri replaces Sérgio Conceição, who is leaving after just 30 matches in charge. On Friday, the club announced the 57-year-old’s appointment and contract details. Allegri previously managed Milan from 2010 to 2014, winning the Serie A title in his first season and the Supercoppa Italiana. He returns after recent spells at Juventus, where he won five Serie A titles and reached two Champions League finals. Allegri’s official unveiling signals the start of a new era for the Rossoneri following a difficult campaign.

MILAN’S CURRENT SITUATION

The 2024/25 season has been challenging for AC Milan. Despite winning the Supercoppa Italiana against Inter, they finished eighth in Serie A and lost the Coppa Italia final to Bologna. This means Milan will not play in any European competitions next season, which is a major disappointment for one of Italy’s most successful clubs. The absence of continental football adds pressure to Allegri’s mission to rebuild the team and restore it to the top of Italian football.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR ALLEGRI AND MILAN?

Allegri takes over a squad in need of new direction and energy. His first official match will be the opening day of the 2025/26 Serie A season, though he will serve a touchline ban during the Coppa Italia preliminary round. With no European distractions, Milan can focus fully on improving their league position. Allegri is expected to be active in the summer transfer market. He will work with club leaders to reshape the squad and close the gap to Serie A’s top teams. The next big test for Milan will be their first Serie A game, where everyone will watch Allegri’s new team closely.
