Jadon Sancho Set to Return to Manchester United After Chelsea Talks Collapse
Jadon Sancho will leave Chelsea and go back to Manchester United this month. The two clubs couldn’t agree on his personal terms for a permanent transfer. The main issue was Sancho’s salary, as Chelsea didn’t want to match his current wage at United.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Sancho spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Chelsea. Chelsea could have made the move permanent for £25 million at the end of June. Sancho had seven league goal involvements in 31 appearances and scored in Chelsea’s 4-1 Conference League final win over Real Betis. But Chelsea decided not to sign him permanently. Instead, they’ll pay a £5 million penalty fee to Manchester United as the loan deal stated. Salary disagreements were a big factor. Sancho reportedly earns £250,000 per week at United, which Chelsea didn’t want to match.
CHELSEA’S SEASON AND SANCHO’S IMPACT
Chelsea finished 5th in the Premier League, earning a spot in the Europa League after winning the Europa Conference League. Sancho started well but his form dropped mid-season. He became less of a regular starter under Enzo Maresca. Still, he had his best season since returning to English football, making important contributions in Europe and helping Chelsea win a major trophy. Despite this, his inconsistent performances and high wage demands made Chelsea decide not to invest long-term.
WHAT NEXT FOR SANCHO AND UNITED?
Sancho will return to Manchester United at the end of June but is not likely to stay long-term. United are open to selling him and will consider offers from Premier League and overseas clubs. United finished 8th in the league this season but won the FA Cup. Their next game is the Community Shield against Manchester City, with squad changes expected this summer. Chelsea will now look for attacking players elsewhere. Their targets include Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund and United’s Alejandro Garnacho.
