Nottingham Forest Sign Three Brazilian Players for €35m
Nottingham Forest made a big move in the summer transfer window. They signed three Botafogo players for a total of €35 million (£29.4m). The Premier League team signed striker Igor Jesus, center-back Jair Cunha, and left-back Cuiabano. These players will help strengthen the squad for next season’s domestic and European games.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Nottingham Forest agreed to a deal with Brazilian club Botafogo to transfer three players for €35 million. The three players are 24-year-old forward Igor Jesus, 20-year-old center-back Jair Cunha, and 23-year-old left-back Cuiabano. The final papers are being completed to make the transfers official. Igor Jesus already said goodbye to Botafogo fans and will play his last game against Ceará on Wednesday.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
This triple signing shows Forest’s ambition. They finished 14th in the Premier League last season with 45 points, just 7 points above the relegation zone. The club will play in the Europa Conference League next season, so they need more players. Igor Jesus has been the best among the three, scoring 15 goals and giving six assists in 54 games for Botafogo.
He will make Forest’s attack much stronger, as they only scored 48 goals in the league last season. Jair Cunha, who is 6’5″ tall, has been compared to Forest’s defender Murillo for his strength and ability with the ball. Cuiabano is an attacking left-back with two goals and three assists in 21 games for Botafogo this season. He will add competition to the current left-back options and increase versatility in Forest’s defense.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR FOREST?
Signing these three Brazilian players is a great start to the transfer window, but Forest are likely to keep looking for new players. The club needs more reinforcements to improve from last season’s mid-table position and make a mark in Europe. There are rumors that midfielder Danilo might leave, with Olympique Lyon interested, which would create a further need for new players.
Forest start their Premier League season in just over two months with a home game against Brighton & Hove Albion, who finished 11th last season, just three points ahead of them. Manager Nuno Espírito Santo will work to quickly incorporate his new Brazilian signings during pre-season to get them ready for the challenges of Premier League and European football when competitive matches begin in August.
