Como President Confirms: Fabregas Not Leaving Despite Inter Interest

Como president Mirwan Suwarso has shut down talk that head coach Cesc Fabregas could move to Inter Milan. Suwarso says Fabregas is a key part of the club’s long-term plan.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

Suwarso made it clear that Como has told Inter Milan they cannot have Fabregas. “We have communicated our refusal directly to the president of Inter, who has recognised it with the courtesy and clarity that is expected among clubs that have mutual respect,” Suwarso said. Como has no plans to let Fabregas go, despite all the rumors.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fabregas is a popular name in coaching circles after leading newly-promoted Como to 10th place in Serie A last season. Inter Milan wanted him to replace former manager Simone Inzaghi, who left the club following a 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final. Reports suggest that Inzaghi is set to take over at Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal.

Yesterday, Fabregas himself reiterated his commitment to Como’s long-term project while attending the South by Southwest conference in London. “I really believe in Como’s long-term project, I arrived here as a player and I’m very, very happy because I can work here the way I want,” he said. The 38-year-old also holds shares in Como, further strengthening his ties to the ambitious club that is targeting European qualification this season. The club’s vision is supported by its owners, Robert and Michael Hartono, listed as two of the richest Asians by Forbes.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR INTER?

Inter now have just 12 days to move on from Fabregas and hire a new manager before the Club World Cup kicks off. The Nerazzurri face Mexican side Monterrey on June 18th, followed by a potential match against Oyimpique Marseille in the final. Although Galatasaray’s ex-manager Hakan Calhanoglu remains available after only posting a farewell message to the club on Instagram, Stefan de Vrij is still at Inter after signing a new contract in June 2020. Simone Bastoni, Tonny Vilhena and Davide Frattesi are some of the other candidates being linked with taking over the San Siro hot seat.

Meanwhile, Como’s determination to keep Fabregas cannot be overlooked. Suwarso concluded by saying alongside Fabregas: “Our path is long, it will last for several seasons and it revolves around Cesc Fabregas, who will not leave the club.” His words could be seen as a declaration that Inter will have to look elsewhere if they want to find Inzaghi’s replacement before their crucial Club World Cup fixture. In a separate interview with Marca Radio on Tuesday, Fabregas reiterated his desire to lead Como in the same way he led Arsenal to glory as a captain. Fabregas is tying himself more and more closely to the Serie A club after showing incredible resilience despite having had no head coaching experience prior to joining them last summer
