Barcelona Set to Announce New Player as Transfer Rules Ease

Barcelona president Joan Laporta says the club will soon announce a new player. Now, the team can spend money again in the market.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Laporta says Barcelona can now spend as much as they save from sales. He said, “We can sign players normally and are in the 1:1. We are about to make an imminent signing and are working on another.”

Laporta also said, “Our relationship with La Liga is professional and flexible. They now know better what we have had to go through. We are about to make a very close signing. With the other we are more or less on standby because we strive and now we are in a position to offer the player less than we have offered until now.”

The club was under strict financial controls and could not sign new players before. But now they have some room to strengthen the squad.

BARCELONA’S SEASON AND TRANSFER PLANS

Barcelona won La Liga this season and also reached the Champions League semi-finals. The club earns about €950 million this year and will earn more next year. So they can now meet the financial fair play rules of La Liga.

Sporting director Deco is leading the transfer plans. Nico Williams is a priority target. There are talks between his side and Barcelona. Laporta said, “Xavi and Deco consider Nico Williams a strategic signing and a priority for Barça in the event that Ousmane does not recover for the last three months of the season.” Also, Xavi wants Rodri as the replacement of a long-injured Ousmane Dembele but a move doesn’t look feasible in the winter.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR BARCELONA?

Barcelona will announce a signing in the coming days and continue working on others. Their key target now is Williams.

The new financial situation will allow them to address needs in attack and defense. They want to defend their league title and push further in the Champions League. Next, they will face either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final in April.
