AC Milan Open Talks with Bayer Leverkusen for Granit Xhaka Transfer

AC Milan have started discussing a transfer with Bayer Leverkusen for Granit Xhaka. The Swiss midfielder is interested in joining Milan this summer. The Italian team wants to add experienced players to their squad.

WHAT HAPPENED?

AC Milan spoke directly with Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday about Granit Xhaka‘s transfer. Xhaka, who moved to Leverkusen from Arsenal in 2023, is interested in playing in Serie A. He likes Milan’s plans and wants to join them. Talks are just beginning with Milan ready to offer around €10 million. Leverkusen are hesitant to sell, especially after losing important players earlier this summer.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR MILAN AND LEVERKUSEN

Signing Xhaka would greatly improve Milan’s midfield. They are rebuilding after a tough 2024-25 season. Although they finished fourth in Serie A and secured Champions League football, they were 21 points behind champions Inter. Sporting director Igli Tare and coach Massimiliano Allegri are seeking more leadership in midfield. Xhaka, along with another target Luka Modric, plays a key role in their plan. For Leverkusen, Xhaka was crucial, starting nearly every Bundesliga match last season as they finished third. New manager Erik ten Hag wishes to retain Xhaka for team stability after the loss of Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong, and Florian Wirtz.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Milan and Leverkusen will continue negotiations over the next few days. Leverkusen are in a strong position since Xhaka’s contract runs until 2028. However, Xhaka’s willingness to move could sway discussions. Both teams are preparing for pre-season. Milan’s first competitive match is in late August in Serie A. Fans hope for more signings before the new season starts. Leverkusen must decide whether to sell Xhaka or retain him as they aim to compete again in the Bundesliga and Champions League.
