Chelsea End Pursuit of Mike Maignan and Trust Current Goalkeepers
Chelsea have decided not to pursue AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan this transfer window. The club will continue with their current goalkeepers for the 2025/26 season.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Chelsea wanted to sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan, especially before the FIFA Club World Cup. Talks broke down about 12 days ago because they couldn’t agree on a transfer fee. Chelsea have not tried to resume negotiations and have stated they are no longer pursuing Maignan. They believe in their current goalkeepers, Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, and soon-to-arrive Mike Penders from Genk. They are more focused on deciding which goalkeepers might leave, instead of signing new ones.
CHELSEA’S CURRENT SITUATION
Chelsea finished last season in sixth place in the Premier League. They qualified for the Europa League with 63 points, just two points behind fifth-placed Tottenham. Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic shared goalkeeping duties. Petrovic performed well in the second half of the season. With new manager Enzo Maresca getting ready for pre-season, the club is confident in their goalkeepers’ depth and quality.
WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA AND AC MILAN?
Chelsea may reduce their goalkeeping squad by selling or loaning out at least one player. Djordje Petrovic, who spent last season on loan at Strasbourg and was not included in the Club World Cup squad, might leave permanently. Young Mike Penders is expected to be loaned to Strasbourg. AC Milan plan to keep Maignan as their number one goalkeeper and will resume contract renewal talks with him at the end of the summer window. Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign in August and face an early test as they aim to improve on last season’s finish and challenge for a top-four spot.
