Jhonny Cardoso Set for €32 Million Move from Real Betis to Atlético Madrid

Atlético Madrid and Real Betis have reached an agreement for American midfielder Jhonny Cardoso. The 23-year-old will join Diego Simeone’s squad on a five-year contract in a deal worth up to €32m.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After weeks of negotiations, Atlético have finally agreed terms with Betis for the signing of Cardoso. Cardoso’s rapid rise at Betis last season, during which he played 46 matches in all competitions, made him a priority target for Atlético. He is expected to complete the move in the next 24 hours and is likely to be available for pre-season under Simeone.

WHY CARDOSO STANDS OUT?

Cardoso was Betis’ unsung hero last season after joining in January 2024. He helped them finish sixth in La Liga and reach the UEFA Europa Conference League final, thereby establishing himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the division. He will add much-needed physicality and energy to Atlético’s midfield especially as veteran Koke nears the end of his career.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Atlético finished third last season and exited the Club World Cup at the group stage, needing reinforcement. They hope Cardoso’s arrival, along with a few more signings, will help them close the gap to Real Madrid and Barcelona next season. Cardoso will be competing for a starting spot alongside Conor Gallagher, Pablo Barrios, Marcos Llorente and Rodrigo De Paul. Simeone’s side open the new season with what could be a crucial La Liga match and will need to be firing if they want to challenge for the title next term.
