Liverpool Insert €60m Buy-Back Clause in Jarell Quansah Sale to Bayer Leverkusen

Liverpool have confirmed the sale of young centre-back Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £35 million. They can buy him back for more than €60 million starting in 2027.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The 22-year-old Quansah is leaving for the Bundesliga champions, where he has a guaranteed route to the first team that Liverpool cannot currently offer. The two clubs have agreed a deal worth up to £35 million, including add-ons. Quansah is expected to travel to Germany for a medical after the conclusion of the Under-21 European Championship on Saturday.

According to a previous report we published, the fee paid by Leverkusen is similar to what they received from Liverpool when they sold Quansah’s former teammate Frimpong in this transfer window. Liverpool have inserted a buy-back clause in Quansah’s deal, which means he could return to the club in a few years, and for a relatively modest fee, should Leverkusen agree to a sale.

WHAT THIS DEAL MEANS FOR LIVERPOOL

Quansah was expected to complete a temporary move away from the club during the January transfer window, before he was forced back into action and then signed a new contract that tied him down until 2029. He continued to develop into a key player in Liverpool’s setup last season, but he is unwilling to wait for first-team opportunities in what is a stacked line of defenders at the club.

The sale allows Liverpool to sign an upgrade at the centre-back position, with Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi thought to have been identified as a target, though he has a reported £80 million release clause. There is no plan to make Quansah’s England Under-21 international team-mate Pape Sarr’s move permanent following his successful loan spell at the club that ended in glory in Wembley win earlier this season.

WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

The move represents a great chance for Quansah to cement his place in the line-up for the former Bundesliga champions and to continue his development as one of the best talents in the world. Beyond that, Liverpool have significant business to conduct this summer, with Darwin Nunez expected to leave the club shortly and Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze having been targeted as a potential stiriker replacement.

The Reds are also in the market for a star winger, and it remains to be seen if they solve that issue before the start of pre-season, when big spending is on the cards once again.
