Timo Werner Considering Move to New York Red Bulls After Leaving RB Leipzig

Timo Werner is in talks to join New York Red Bulls. Both sides are hopeful about agreeing soon. The German international, recently on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, is eyeing a fresh start in Major League Soccer instead of returning to RB Leipzig.

Werner struggled for playing time at Tottenham Hotspur last season, as previously reported.

TRANSFER TALKS UNDERWAY

Werner struggled at Tottenham, scoring just one goal and assisting three in 27 matches. Now, he wants a change. New York Red Bulls and RB Leipzig are discussing the deal terms, including salary and contract length.

Werner, 29, seems interested in joining MLS. Red Bulls have space for a designated player, allowing the signing within league rules. Talks have been ongoing since last summer and recently gained momentum with Werner’s willingness to move.

WHY THIS MOVE MATTERS

New York Red Bulls want to improve their squad after narrowly missing their first MLS Cup in 2024, losing to LA Galaxy in the final. Werner’s arrival would reunite him with a former RB Leipzig teammate, Emil Forsberg, adding proven European experience to their attack.

Werner’s goals and Champions League experience could boost Red Bulls’ chances of winning a trophy this season. At 29, Werner still has much to offer, and the club believes he will fit well with other international stars on their roster.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

The MLS transfer window opens on July 24 and closes on August 21, allowing time to close the deal. Red Bulls are near the top of the Eastern Conference and face Washington D.C. United next.

Werner could debut for the New York Red Bulls as soon as early August, according to a previous report.
