Chelsea Edge Closer to Joao Pedro as Newcastle Rivalry Heats Up

Chelsea have intensified their pursuit of Brighton’s Joao Pedro, with the Brazilian now leaning towards a move to Stamford Bridge as Newcastle United continue to push for his signature.

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH JOAO PEDRO?

Chelsea and Newcastle have both submitted bids for Joao Pedro, but Brighton remain firm in their valuation. Newcastle’s initial offer of £50 million was rejected, and Chelsea have also seen a proposal of around £58 million turned down, as Brighton want over £60 million for their forward. Despite this, Joao Pedro is reportedly interested in joining Chelsea if a fee can be agreed, making the West London club the current favourites in the race. Talks remain ongoing, and both clubs are keen to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season.

According to a previous report we published, Chelsea submitted a bid for Pedro, but Newcastle have also made an offer for the forward.

LATEST ON CHELSEA AND NEWCASTLE

Chelsea’s interest in Pedro comes after closing in on another signing, Jamie Gittens, as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of a busy campaign. The Blues recently edged past Benfica to reach the next round of the Club World Cup, showing signs of progress under Enzo Maresca. Chelsea finished the 2024/25 Premier League season in fourth place, securing European football but aiming higher next term. Newcastle, still searching for their first summer signing, ended last season also in European spots, but aim higher, and need reinforcements to challenge the top four. Both teams are preparing for their opening Premier League fixtures.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

With both teams knowing Brighton’s asking price, negotiations are expected to continue in the coming days. For Chelsea, landing Joao Pedro would add more firepower to a team already full of young talent, while Newcastle hope to convince the forward with the promise of regular game time. Both clubs want the deal concluded before the new season starts. The outcome could have a significant impact on their ambitions for the 2025/26 campaign and reshape the competition for European spots in the Premier League.
