Viktor Gyökeres Refuses to Return to Sporting Amid Transfer Row

Viktor Gyökeres has told Sporting CP he will not play for them again. A disagreement over a promised transfer fee is the cause. The Swedish striker feels let down and tired from the situation.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The problem began when Sporting‘s president, Frederico Varandas, said the club did not agree to let Gyökeres leave for a set price this summer. Gyökeres insists there was a promise made last year that he could leave for €60 million plus €10 million in bonuses. Sporting now want more money, and Varandas has said the player “won’t leave for €60 million plus €10m. He just won’t.” In response, Gyökeres has gone on strike and told the club he will not come back. The situation has gained attention from clubs all over Europe, like Arsenal and Manchester United, who are both linked with transfer interests in Gyökeres

According to a previous report, Sporting CP demand more than €60 million for Viktor Gyökeres, rejecting offers of €60 million plus €10 million in add-ons.

THE SEASON SO FAR

Gyökeres had an impressive 2024/25 season, scoring 54 goals in 52 competitions and helping Sporting win the Primeira Liga title. His performances made him one of the most wanted strikers in Europe. Sporting finished first in the league, beating rivals Benfica by just two points

Sporting CP recently finished first in the Liga Portugal according to a previous report.

Throughout the season, Gyökeres also contributed with key assists and was the main player in Sporting’s attack. His absence is a big problem for the team as they prepare for the next campaign.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR GYÖKERES AND SPORTING?

As Gyökeres refuses to play and wants the previous agreement honored, Sporting must now consider their options. The club stands firm on what they want but risks losing their top scorer in bad circumstances. Arsenal and Manchester United are keeping an eye on the situation, while Juventus had an initial contract offer turned down. Sporting’s preseason is due to start in early July, and with the first league match just over a month away, resolving this standoff is urgent. If a deal is not reached, Sporting could begin the season without their star striker, while Gyökeres persists in pursuing his Premier League dream

Sporting CP’s first league match of the 2025-26 season is against Gil Vicente according to a previous report.
