Fluminense Stun Inter Milan to Reach FIFA Club World Cup Quarterfinals
Fluminense caused a big surprise at the FIFA Club World Cup. They beat last year’s Champions League runners-up Inter Milan 2-0 and booked a spot in the quarterfinals.
Fluminense advanced to the last 16 of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup from Group F.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The game started quickly, with Fluminense taking the lead in the third minute. Rene won the ball and passed it to Jhon Arias, whose cross was deflected. German Cano then headed it in from close range, scoring past Inter’s goalie Yann Sommer. Inter tried to fight back with chances for Federico Dimarco and Stefan de Vrij, but neither could score. Fluminense stayed a threat and secured the win late in stoppage time, when Hercules finished calmly to close the game at 2-0. The result delighted Brazilian fans while sending Inter out of the competition.
BRAZILIAN SIDE SHINES AGAINST ITALIAN GIANTS
Although Fluminense have been inconsistent in Brazil’s Série A this year, they looked on point here. Their disciplined defense, led by veteran goalkeeper Fabio, kept a star-studded Inter attack in check. Inter Milan had been favored to advance. But despite having chances through Lautaro Martinez and Federico Dimarco, they could not convert. After placing second in last year’s Champions League, Inter Milan finished second in Serie A last season and have been struggling for form lately, including a poor run of results in the Italian league.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR FLUMINENSE AND INTER?
Fluminense now move on to the Club World Cup quarters, where they will meet Al Hilal on Friday in Orlando. Both sides come in with good form, with Man City finishing second in the Premier League and Al Hilal currently top of the Saudi Pro League. Meanwhile, Inter must quickly pick themselves up, as they return to Italy to focus on Serie A and Italy’s domestic cups, while facing a tough fixture against Atalanta next week.
