Olivier Giroud Returns to Ligue 1 with Lille on Free Transfer

Olivier Giroud has completed his move to Lille, returning to French football after over 10 years abroad. The veteran striker has signed a contract that runs until June 2026, with an option for another season.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Lille announced Giroud‘s signing on a free transfer after he left LAFC. The French forward, who will be 39 in September, joins Lille to bring experience to a young team. He will wear the number 9 shirt. Giroud last played in Ligue 1 13 years ago, helping Montpellier win the title in 2012. He replaces Jonathan David, who left this summer. Giroud struggled at LAFC, scoring five goals in 37 matches, but his career record is still impressive.

WHY LILLE NEED GIROUD NOW

Lille finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season, earning a spot in the UEFA Europa League. After top scorer Jonathan David left, the team’s young attack needed a leader. Giroud’s leadership is important, as he is France’s all-time leading scorer. Lille hopes Giroud’s experience will help them manage the demands of both domestic and European competitions.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE NEW SEASON

Giroud will join Lille’s pre-season shortly to get to know his new teammates. Lille start their Ligue 1 season against Brest, who finished in the middle of the table last season. The team aims to reach the top four, and Giroud’s role could be vital in league and Europa League matches. Fans are eager to see if he can rediscover his scoring form and lead Lille to success in France and Europe.
