Viktor Gyökeres Sacrifices Wages to Push Arsenal Move

Viktor Gyökeres has agreed to give up €2 million from his salary to help secure a transfer from Sporting CP to Arsenal, as negotiations between the clubs continue over the final fee.

GYÖKERES TAKES PAY CUT TO FACILITATE DEAL

The Swedish striker is determined to join Arsenal this summer. He has formally accepted a significant reduction in his salary—€2 million—showing his strong desire to play in the Premier League. While personal terms are already settled, Sporting and Arsenal have not yet agreed on the transfer fee, with Sporting demanding more than €60 million for Gyökeres. Talks are ongoing, and Gyökeres has received permission from Sporting to delay his return to pre-season training until later this week as discussions progress.

A previous report confirmed that Sporting CP demand more than €60 million for Viktor Gyökeres.

WHY ARSENAL WANT GYÖKERES

Arsenal are searching for a new striker after another close Premier League title race last season, where they finished second with 70 points behind Liverpool. Gyökeres had an exceptional 2024/25 campaign at Sporting, scoring 54 goals in 52 matches and helping his team win the Primeira Liga title and the Taça de Portugal. His combination of strength, movement, and finishing ability has made him one of Europe’s most wanted forwards. Arsenal see him as the ideal addition to help bridge the gap to City and add much-needed firepower up front.

A previous report confirmed that Gyökeres scored 54 goals in the 2024/25 season.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Arsenal are hopeful of reaching an agreement with Sporting in the coming days as they prepare for the new Premier League season, which begins in August. Sporting, meanwhile, start their Champions League qualification campaign soon and need clarity about Gyökeres’ future before making plans for their squad. Arsenal’s opening fixture is at home to Manchester United, while Sporting still don’t know their opponent on the opening weekend in Portugal. Both clubs will want to resolve the situation quickly to prepare properly for their first competitive matches of the season.
