Leeds United Closing In on Sean Longstaff Transfer from Newcastle

Leeds United are close to signing midfielder Sean Longstaff. They have agreed on personal terms with a bid of £10 million plus £2 million add-ons proposed to Newcastle.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

Recently promoted to the Premier League, Leeds have made a third offer for Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff. The 27-year-old midfielder has played more than 200 matches for Newcastle, his boyhood club, but has elected to leave St James’ Park this season as his contract was due to expire next summer. Longstaff has spent 11 years at Newcastle, but has fallen out of favor under manager Eddie Howe after struggling with injuries, featuring in just 16 fixtures last season.

He is looking for regular football and only Newcastle’s acceptance of Leeds’ offer is needed for the transfer to be completed.

WHY THIS MATTERS

This transfer arrives at a critical stage for both clubs. Leeds are strengthening their squad, as they look to avoid relegation, while giving Longstaff a route to regular football. Bringing in an experienced midfielder like Longstaff will allow Leeds to explore more options in the central areas of the park. For Newcastle, moving Longstaff opens up opportunities for other midfielders, while also generating a transfer fee. Longstaff had been a key player when Newcastle secured a Champions League berth in 2022/23, but since then, he has not been able to recapture that form consistently.

According to a previous report, Newcastle finished fifth in the Premier League last season.

WHAT’S NEXT?

With personal terms agreed, the final step is for Newcastle to accept the bid. After that, Longstaff will join a Leeds side desperately trying to avoid another relegation. Newcastle, meanwhile, will look to reinforce their midfield in the summer transfer window as they push to return among the top English sides.
