Mathis Amougou Set for Permanent Move to Strasbourg
Chelsea’s Mathis Amougou is set to move to Strasbourg permanently. He joined Chelsea a few months ago. Since February, the deal has been in progress. Amougou will sign a long-term deal with Strasbourg in Ligue 1. This is part of a partnership between the two clubs owned by BlueCo.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The 19-year-old signed an eight-year contract with Chelsea in February 2025 for approximately €15 million. He played just two games for the club. He was linked to a move to Strasbourg. Chelsea plans to make the midfielder’s move permanent by July 2024. FIFA has placed restrictions on loan transfers between clubs with the same owner.
According to reports, Amougou is expected to sign a five-year contract with Strasbourg. Additionally, Chelsea will likely include a buyback clause in the deal.
WHY STRASBOURG MOVED QUICKLY
Strasbourg are rebuilding their squad after losing key midfielders Habib Diarra, who joined Sunderland from Strasbourg, and Andrey Santos. Amougou is expected to play a central role under new manager Liam Rosenior. The club will be competing in Ligue 1 and the Europa Conference League, aiming to enhance its squad with young prospects.
Strasbourg are also signing Maxi Oyedele from Legia Warsaw for €6 million to strengthen their squad. Furthermore, Chelsea will loan Kendry Paez and Mike Penders to Strasbourg. However, due to loan restrictions, Amougou’s move will be permanent.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR BOTH CLUBS
Strasbourg finished 7th place in Ligue 1 last season, aiming for a higher finish this season, and Amougou’s arrival is expected to help them close the gap to European spots. Chelsea are rebuilding under new manager Enzo Maresca after finishing fourth in the Premier League, guaranteeing Champions League qualification.
Additionally, Amougou’s move creates space for new signings and ensures his development continues in a competitive environment, with the potential for him to return to Chelsea if he performs well in France.
