Cristian Romero Set to Stay at Tottenham Despite Atlético Madrid Rumors

Tottenham star Cristian Romero is expected to stay at Spurs. Romero was linked with a move to Atlético Madrid, but Tottenham have denied those rumors. The Argentine centre-back is reportedly mulling over a new contract offer from the club as he enters the final two years in his deal. According to a previous report, Cristian Romero is key to Tottenham’s future plans and is not for sale this summer.

WHAT HAPPENED?

At the start of the summer, it was widely reported that Atlético Madrid wanted to sign Romero from Tottenham, as the 29-year-old was seen as a key player in the capital club’s efforts to shore up the defense. However, Atlético and Spurs have already denied reports of reaching an agreement over the defender, who was then offered a new deal by Spurs. Furthermore, a previous report confirmed that Cristian Romero did not accept Tottenham’s contract extension offer.

While Sport had reported that Romero was not keen on signing the new deal at Tottenham, 90Min now claims that the centre-back wants to stay at the club and extend his contract. Moreover, Tottenham are reportedly relaxed about the situation of the Argentina international regarding his future.

THE RETURN

Romero has already returned to the Tottenham training ground on Tuesday after his extended break and will soon join the squad for their pre-season tour of South Korea where the north London side will play Juventus, Celtic and Premier League rivals Manchester United in a pre-season South Korea tournament. Tottenham’s first pre-season friendly is on July 13 against Celtic.

WHAT NEXT?

Romero will likely feature when Tottenham takes on Juventus on Wednesday in their first pre-season match in South Korea before they play last season’s Europa League runners-up Manchester United in a pre-season tournament in Korea. The 29-year-old played more than 3,000 minutes in the Premier League last season and scored four goals last season.
