Liverpool Make Record Move for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak
Liverpool have made a record bid to Newcastle for Alexander Isak to strengthen their attack. They are also interested in Hugo Ekitike if Isak’s deal falls through.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Liverpool have made contact with Newcastle over a move worth up to £120m for Isak, which would make the deal a record signing for the former. However, Newcastle are adamant about not selling Isak and sources state that they hope to keep both him and target Ekitike at St. James’ Park.
In fact, manager Eddie Howe reportedly wants to use Isak and Ekitike in tandem rather than have one as the other’s replacement.
Isak remains under contract at the club until 2028, having scored 62 goals and provided 11 assists in 109 appearances for Newcastle so far.
Newcastle United are in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt to sign Hugo Ekitike.
WHY ARE LIVERPOOL INTERESTED IN ISAK?
Liverpool need a star signing in attack to strengthen the side as they won the title race last season but failed to be competitive in any other competition, with the team wanting to be competitive in more fronts, and needing reinforcements after the tragic passing of Diogo Jota earlier this month. Though Arne Slot’s men are still a strong attacking side, there is interest in a prolific striker, with Isak fitting the bill perfectly having emerged as Newcastle’s top scorer last season netting 27 goals and assisting 6 more in all competitions, thus becoming one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe.
WHAT NEXT FOR BOTH CLUBS?
Newcastle are pushing ahead with a bid to sign Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, with reports claiming that negotiations are in the final stages. However, the club are still ready to put a foot down over not selling Isak, and would even look to offer him a new contract in the coming weeks.
Liverpool will then have to decide quickly over Ekitike if Newcastle refuse to negotiate for Isak.
Liverpool finished last season as Premier League champions, while Newcastle finished fifth and qualified for the Europa League. Both clubs will want to strengthen their teams further in the hopes to close the gap at the top.
