Enzo Barrenechea Set to Join Benfica in €15m Move from Aston Villa

Enzo Barrenechea is about to sign for Benfica. The Portuguese giants have wrapped up their first signing of the summer window with the capture of the 24-year-old midfielder, who has agreed to a five-year deal with the club as confirmed.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Argentine struggled for regular game time at Aston Villa but enjoyed a remarkable campaign at Valencia last season, playing 31 matches and helping the Spanish giants stave off relegation from La Liga. The move that has been agreed will initially work on loan, with the obligation to buy getting triggered under specific conditions. Reports indicate that Benfica will own 70% of Barrenechea‘s rights as previously stated, securing him at the Portuguese giants for five years.

WHAT NEXT FOR BENFICA?

The Portuguese giants are targeting young talent with potential to grow and contribute over several years, and Barrenechea’s technical skills and potential for improvement convinced them to take this step. Benfica take on Sporting – who finished above them in the league last season and beat them in the Portuguese Cup final – in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.
