Aaron Anselmino Completes Loan Move to Borussia Dortmund

Aaron Anselmino has moved to Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea for the 2025/26 season. The deal has no buy option, and Dortmund will pay his salary according to reports.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Anselmino joined Chelsea in August 2024 from Boca Juniors. He spent the first half of last season on loan back at Boca, making 18 appearances. Chelsea called him back in January, where he debuted in the Club World Cup against Benfica as a late substitute. Even though he impressed in training, Chelsea decided to loan him to Dortmund for more playing time after injuries to key Dortmund defenders. Anselmino will wear the number 28 shirt for Dortmund.

DORTMUND’S DEFENSIVE NEEDS AND TEAM PERFORMANCE

With Anselmino’s arrival, Borussia Dortmund is trying to address their defensive issues due to central defense injuries. Dortmund finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season, securing a spot in the Champions League as noted in recent updates. However, they struggled defensively in preseason matches and in their Bundesliga opener, making reinforcements necessary. Dortmund will need a strong defense after drawing their Bundesliga opener to St Pauli 3-3, a team that struggled against relegation last season, and will want to improve the team before facing Union Berlin next weekend.

WHAT NEXT FOR ANSELMINO AND CHELSEA?

The loan is a chance for Anselmino to gain experience in Germany’s top league and European competition. He aims to secure playing time under Dortmund coach Niko Kovac and develop further. Chelsea is tracking his progress, expecting him to return in June 2026 with more experience. Dortmund hopes Anselmino will help improve their defense and push for a higher finish in the Bundesliga and the Champions League.
