Alexis Sánchez Set to Join Sevilla on One-Year Deal

Alexis Sánchez will sign a one-year contract with Sevilla. The club is moving quickly to complete his free transfer before the transfer window closes.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Sevilla have reached an agreement with Alexis Sánchez, who is expected to arrive today for a medical. The 36-year-old Chilean forward joins from Udinese on a free transfer, after leaving the Serie A club. This move marks his return to La Liga more than a decade after his stint with Barcelona. Documents are being prepared and official confirmation is set to arrive soon.

WHY SEVILLA WANTED SÁNCHEZ

Sevilla made this move after losing winger Dodi Lukebakio in a transfer deadline day shuffle. The club hopes Alexis’s experience will boost a squad that is currently struggling; Sevilla are sitting in 12th place after last weekend’s win and want to secure their stay in Spain’s La Liga this season. Last season, the club finished 17th in La Liga and are looking to rebuild after a disappointing season.

Sánchez scored three goals and provided two assists in 29 games in Serie A for Udinese last season, contributing significantly despite Udinese’s struggles, as they ended up near the bottom of the table and just managed to avoid relegation. His arrival is expected to bring leadership not only to Sevilla’s attack but to the entire team. Sánchez also reunites with fellow Chilean international Gabriel Suazo, who started in Sevilla’s 2-0 win over Girona.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR SEVILLA AND SÁNCHEZ?

Sevilla’s next match is against Villarreal in La Liga. Villarreal are currently near the top spots after two wins and a draw in their three opening matches, while Sevilla are searching for their first home victory of the season. They sit just one point above the relegation zone and need a boost from new arrivals if they are to pull clear.

The club is also working to sign a defensive midfielder before the window closes, with ongoing talks for Sofyan Amrabat. Fans will be hoping Sánchez can make an immediate impact as manager Matías Almeyda looks to drag his team out of a difficult spell.
