Julián Álvarez wants his Argentina teammate Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero to join him at Atlético Madrid. He believes the club’s environment feels like their national team.

ÁLVAREZ CALLS FOR ROMERO

The Argentine striker, who moved to Atlético Madrid from Manchester City last season, wants help from his national team in defense. “I hope Cuti Romero will come to Atlético, he’d help us a lot,” Álvarez told Spanish newspaper Diario AS. He also said the club feels similar to Argentina: “Here is more similar to Argentina.”

ROMERO THINKING OF LEAVING TOTTENHAM

Romero has become one of the world’s best central defenders since joining Tottenham from Atalanta in 2022. But he has had injury troubles this season, missing 27 matches. Recently, he hinted at leaving, saying: “We’ll see when the season ends. My focus is always on performing at my best.”

Tottenham may miss the Champions League next season, which could influence Romero’s decision. They need to win the Europa League to qualify, as they currently sit outside the top four in the Premier League.

SIMEONE’S ARGENTINA PLAN

Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone wants to bring together members of Argentina’s World Cup-winning squad from 2022. It started with Álvarez, and now Simeone seems interested in Romero for his project.

Reports say Romero may have verbally agreed to join Atlético. They now need to negotiate with Tottenham, who may want around €60 million for Romero. Atlético Madrid is currently third in La Liga, eight points behind Barcelona, and 17 points behind leaders Real Madrid with four games left in the season.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Atlético Madrid will try to secure a place in next season’s Champions League by facing Valencia this weekend. They have a seven-point lead over fifth-placed Athletic Bilbao.

Meanwhile, Romero and Tottenham are fighting to reach the Europa League final while sitting in 16th place in a  Premier League finish. The coming weeks will be crucial for Romero’s future as both clubs work on this potential transfer.
