Anderlecht Make Move for Canadian Star Nathan Saliba

Anderlecht have officially offered to buy Nathan Saliba from CF Montréal, aiming for a €2.7 million deal with bonuses. The young Canadian midfielder might soon join one of Belgium’s most successful clubs, taking an exciting step in his career.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Belgian club Anderlecht have made a formal approach for Nathan Saliba, a central midfielder from CF Montréal. The 21-year-old is seen as one of the best young Canadian talents. Saliba had a breakthrough season with Montréal last year. He played 26 matches, scoring one goal and providing one assist in all competitions. He was among MLS’s “22 Under 22,” ranked 14th, and was named Canada Soccer’s 2024 Men’s Young Player of the Year. Saliba also made his debut for the national team in September 2024 and has played three matches for Canada.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Saliba has become a top player for CF Montréal, and his performances have attracted interest from Europe. He is a regular starter and a crucial player for Montréal boss Laurent Courtois. His technical skills, passing vision, and work ethic suit Anderlecht well as they aim to develop young prospects. Montréal, currently in the hunt for an MLS playoff spot, could lose a key player in Saliba. However, they would gain valuable funds from his potential transfer to Anderlecht.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

If negotiations progress smoothly, Saliba could join Anderlecht before the summer transfer window closes, following in the footsteps of former Montréal standout Ismaël Koné, who also made a move to Europe. Anderlecht finished the most recent Belgian Pro League season in second place, ensuring they will compete in European competitions next year. Montréal, meanwhile, continue their MLS campaign fighting to consolidate their playoff position. Their next league fixture is against the New England Revolution, a direct rival for the wild card spots, with just a narrow margin separating the teams in the standings. Saliba’s potential transfer is likely to be completed soon, signaling another Canadian talent’s leap to European football.
