André Onana Set For Manchester United Exit As Trabzonspor Agree Loan Deal
Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana might join Trabzonspor, as the Turkish club has a verbal agreement for a season-long loan. This move depends on Onana’s decision, but it seems like his time at Old Trafford is ending after being left out of the team.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Trabzonspor and Manchester United have agreed to a loan deal to send 29-year-old Onana to Turkey. The transfer window in Turkey is open until September 12, giving Onana time to think about his options. United’s head coach Ruben Amorim has made Altay Bayindir the main goalkeeper after Onana got injured in the preseason. The team also signed Belgian goalkeeper Sanne Lemmens, which pushed Onana further down the ranks. Onana’s recent mistakes against Grimsby Town in the League Cup added to his problems, and he has not played much for United since. Reports indicate that Onana is currently recovering from injury and is expected to miss about two months of action for the club, making his position even more precarious.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Onana moved from Inter Milan to Manchester United in 2023 but struggled to play well consistently. Although he helped United win the FA Cup, his mistakes in important games overshadowed his accomplishments. United finished fifteenth in the Premier League last season, failing to qualify for European competitions. During the summer, the club focused on rebuilding, bringing in Lemmens and giving Bayindir more responsibility. Trabzonspor also finished seventh in the Turkish Süper Lig last season and lost their main goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır to Galatasaray. They need an experienced goalkeeper to replace him as they try to do better this year. According to reports, Trabzonspor currently sits second in the Turkish Süper Lig with 10 points from their first four games, indicating that they are making a stronger push this season.
WHAT’S NEXT?
If Onana agrees to the move, he will become the new main goalkeeper at Trabzonspor. Their next opponents are Gaziantep, who are eighth place with six points from four matches. Meanwhile, United continues their Premier League campaign with Bayindir expected to start as goalkeeper along with new signing Lemmens. As United seeks to improve their position in the league, they are reportedly making a final push to secure a new goalkeeper before the transfer deadline approaches.
