Anthony Elanga to Undergo Medical at Newcastle Ahead of £55m Move

Anthony Elanga is set to join Newcastle United after agreeing on personal terms. He will finalize the transfer from Nottingham Forest after undergoing a medical examination.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Newcastle have agreed to pay Nottingham Forest £55 million for Elanga. The Swedish winger has arrived in Newcastle for his medical before signing a five-year contract. This is Newcastle’s second signing of the summer, but it is their most expensive since buying Alexander Isak. Elanga had trained alone in Portugal after playing for Sweden and was not part of Forest’s pre-season activities. This is Nottingham Forest’s record sale, and Elanga will be a major addition to Eddie Howe’s team this season.

According to a previous report, Nottingham Forest finished seventh in the Premier League last season, marking it as a significant achievement.

WHY ELANGA?

Elanga, 23, had a great season with Nottingham Forest, playing all 38 Premier League games in 2024/25. He was known for his speed, creativity, and ability to score goals. He ranked among the top Premier League wingers in goal-creating actions and crosses per game. His average of 6.65 crosses per 90 minutes was higher than any Newcastle winger last season. Newcastle see him as a solution to their need for more speed and creativity in attack, especially with a busy season ahead, including Champions League football.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR NEWCASTLE AND ELANGA?

With the medical in progress, Elanga’s transfer is expected to be announced soon. Newcastle are preparing for their first Premier League game and a return to the Champions League group stage. They finished fifth last season, and will aim at improving their standings even more this season. Their next match is against Aston Villa on August 16, who finished eighth in the league, three points behind. Elanga is likely to compete for a starting role, adding depth and flexibility to Newcastle’s frontline as they aim for a top-four finish and a strong European showing.
