Anthony Martial Set For Monterrey Move As AEK Athens Gives Green Light

Anthony Martial is close to joining Monterrey after AEK Athens agreed to let the French striker travel to Mexico for a medical and contract signing. Monterrey will pair Martial with Sergio Ramos, marking a major signing as the Mexican transfer window nears closure.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Martial, 29, joined AEK Athens after his Manchester United contract ended in 2024. He has not played for the Greek club since July. He scored nine goals in all competitions last season, but he has been left out of the squad in recent matches. Monterrey made a formal approach for Martial, matching his high salary demands, which stalled talks with other Mexican teams like Pumas UNAM. With AEK Athens’ approval, Martial will travel for a medical and final negotiations, making a move to Monterrey all but certain.

MONTERREY’S SEASON AND TEAM IMPLICATIONS

Rayados de Monterrey have started the Liga MX Apertura 2025 season strongly. As of September 11, they sit second in the standings, only three points behind leaders Club América and two points clear of third-placed Tigres UANL. Monterrey have averaged 1.7 goals per game and boast one of the league’s tightest defenses thanks in part to veteran Sergio Ramos. Adding Martial gives the attack proven European quality, especially needed after the team lost several tight matches earlier in the campaign.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR MARTIAL AND MONTERREY?

Martial is expected to complete his medical and sign his contract before the Mexican transfer window closes on September 13. Monterrey’s next match is against fourth-placed León, who sit four points behind Rayados in the standings. If the deal is finalized in time, Martial could debut this weekend in front of the home fans. Monterrey aims for the title, and Martial’s experience and finishing may prove crucial as the team battles América at the top and faces tight competition from Tigres and León below.
