Arsenal Confirm the Signing of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad

Arsenal have signed Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for £51 million. The 26-year-old midfielder has agreed to a long-term contract and will wear the number 36 shirt for the Gunners.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal triggered Zubimendi’s £51m release clause after reaching an initial agreement with Real Sociedad earlier in the year. The deal was finalized after several months of planning, with Zubimendi identified as Arsenal’s primary midfield target as Jorginho and Thomas Partey enter the final year of their deals. Manager Mikel Arteta played a key role in securing Zubimendi, forming a strong relationship with the player and convincing him to join the north London team. Zubimendi stated that he chose Arsenal because of the club’s playing style and that he sees a bright future with the team. WHY ZUBIMENDI IS IMPORTANT FOR ARSENAL

Zubimendi brings top-level experience as a European champion with Spain and a consistent performer in La Liga. He will be tasked with anchoring Arsenal’s midfield and allowing Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard more freedom to press forward. Zubimendi’s ability to play as a single pivot fits with Arteta’s possession-heavy attacking style. He joins after the signing of his former Real Sociedad teammate Mikel Merino last season.
