Arsenal Secure Deal for Brentford Captain Christian Nørgaard
Arsenal have agreed a deal with Brentford for midfielder Christian Nørgaard. The Danish international is set to undergo a medical after being permitted to travel to London. Nørgaard is set to become Arsenal’s third major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Kepa Arrizabalaga and Martin Zubimendi.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Nørgaard will join Arsenal on a four-year contract. Arsenal will pay a £9.4 million ($12 million) fee, which includes all add-ons. Nørgaard, who wants to make the move, has agreed to personal terms. He will complete a medical at London Colney on Thursday, with Arsenal hoping to finalize the transfer by Friday. Mikel Arteta’s side will then continue their search for a striker. The transfers of Nørgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Zubimendi have cost the clubs about £70 million ($88 million). However, they are still seeking a long-term successor to Alexandre Lacazette.
THE BIGGER CONTEXT
Nørgaard has been a key player for FC Brentford for the past six seasons. He joined the Bees in 2019 from Fiorentina and made 198 appearances, scoring three goals and providing 12 assists. Nørgaard helped Thomas Frank’s side earn promotion to the Premier League and has proven himself at the top level. However, he is set to move to Arsenal this summer.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR ARSENAL AND BRENTFORD?
Nørgaard has agreed to a four-year contract with Arsenal and is set to join the Gunners this summer. Arsenal will continue their search for a striker, with Alexandre Lacazette’s long-term successor still unclear. Brentford, meanwhile, will continue to try to keep Bryan Mbeumo, the club’s top priority, while coping with the departures of Serge Nevill and Mendy. The Bees face Forest in their first game of the new Premier League season in August.
