Arsenal Set to Sign Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting in Major Summer Move

Arsenal are close to signing Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP. They will pay an initial €63.5 million, plus €10 million in add-ons.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After long talks, Arsenal and Sporting CP agreed on a deal for Gyökeres. A key moment was when the player’s agent took a lower commission, allowing the move to happen. Gyökeres, 27, had already agreed to a five-year contract until 2030. He missed the start of Sporting’s preseason to push for the transfer. Arsenal beat other clubs to sign him, and Gyökeres will likely be their most costly signing this window. He should join the team before their US pre-season tour.

A previous report confirmed that Arsenal and Sporting CP are negotiating Viktor Gyökeres’ transfer fee without agreement.

ARTETA SECURES HIS TOP TARGET

After finishing second last season with 70 points, Arsenal needed a reliable striker. The main forwards struggled with injuries and form, with Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus scoring 18 league goals combined. Gyökeres scored 54 goals in 52 matches last season, becoming Liga Portugal‘s top scorer. Sporting won the league in the 2024-25 season in the last matchday leaving Benfica with the second place. Gyökeres’ signing is seen as the final piece of Arsenal’s summer rebuild, which also added Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

A previous report noted that Sporting CP won the Primeira Liga title in the 2024-25 season.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Gyökeres is due for a medical shortly before officially joining Arsenal. He will meet his new teammates ahead of their US pre-season tour, where they will play Inter Miami, Club América, and Manchester United. Arsenal aim to close the gap with Liverpool and stay ahead of Manchester City and Chelsea, who were third and fourth respectively last season. They begin the 2025/26 Premier League campaign against Manchester United, which Gyökeres can use to make a fast impact.
