Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes his team played better than Paris Saint-Germain over two legs. However, they were eliminated from the Champions League semifinals with a 3-1 aggregate loss.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal lost 2-1 in Paris on Wednesday night, completing a 3-1 aggregate defeat, ending their Champions League run in the semis. The Gunners started strong at Parc des Princes, creating three good chances in the first eight minutes. However, PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made important saves, stopping Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard. PSG then took control, with Fabian Ruiz scoring a powerful goal after a botched clearance from a free-kick.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arsenal’s exit means they miss out on their first-ever Champions League final. The Gunners have struggled with set-pieces lately, conceding five goals from such situations since April. Despite attempting 17 crosses in the first half, more than their average for an entire European match, Arsenal couldn’t turn the tie around. Bukayo Saka did score late in the second half to give Arsenal hope, but PSG held on to reach the final against Inter Milan.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Arsenal must now focus on the Premier League, where they are still in the title race. They are just three points behind leaders Manchester City with three matches left. The Gunners play Newcastle United at St. James’ Park this Sunday in a key match. The disappointment of their European exit could either harm their domestic challenge or inspire them to finish strong. With games against Everton and Manchester United still to come, Arteta’s side will aim to turn their Champions League frustration into their first Premier League title since 2004.
