AS Roma Complete Wesley Signing From Flamengo

AS Roma have signed Wesley from Flamengo for €25 million, plus €5 million in add-ons. Wesley will sign a five-year contract with AS Roma, where he is expected to earn €2.5 million per year plus bonuses, marking an exciting new chapter in his career at the Stadio Olimpico.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The 21-year-old right-back has moved from Flamengo to AS Roma on a contract until 2030. Roma paid an initial €25 million, with up to €5 million in bonuses. Wesley has earned two senior caps for Brazil and had a strong season with 1 goal and 3 assists in 26 matches for Flamengo. This transfer follows Flamengo’s signing of Emerson Royal, who joined the team for €9 million. This pivotal move has paved the way for Wesley’s relocation to Italy. He will wear the number 43 shirt for the club and is their 46th Brazilian player as confirmed by a recent report.

WESLEY’S SIGNING IN CONTEXT

This deal is Roma’s third major addition of the summer, following Neil El Aynaoui and Evan Ferguson. It’s a key move ahead of the club’s first season under new coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who has made it clear that Wesley was a targeted addition for his tactical setup. Roma are hoping to improve on last season’s fifth place finish in Serie A, narrowly missing Champions League qualification on the last matchday. Gasperini seeks to utilize Wesley as an advanced wing-back. Notably, Wesley has experience from continental competition, having helped Flamengo win the Copa Libertadores and compete in the Club World Cup according to sources.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR ROMA AND WESLEY?

Roma will soon begin their 2025/26 Serie A campaign, starting against Bologna, who finished just below them last season in 9th place. Both teams start the new season with ambitions for European football, with only three points separating them from last season. Roma hope Wesley’s dynamism will strengthen their right side, as they aim to enhance their standings and close the gap to the top three. Preseason integration and adaptation to Gasperini’s tactical demands will be Wesley’s immediate focus, before his potential competitive debut in August.
