Assignon Completes Stuttgart Medical, Deal Finalized with Rennes
Lorenz Assignon has finished his medical tests at VfB Stuttgart, completing his move from Stade Rennes. Stuttgart will pay €14 million and up to €1 million in add-ons for the French right-back. Rennes also secured a 10% sell-on clause in the deal.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The 24-year-old defender completed his medical at Stuttgart today, June 5. This seals his move from Ligue 1 side Rennes. After weeks of talks, both clubs agreed to a deal worth €14 million, with €1 million in performance bonuses. Assignon signed a four-year contract with Stuttgart, keeping him at the Bundesliga club until 2029.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
This transfer is a major investment for Stuttgart as they prepare for the 2025/26 season. The club has been looking for new players at right-back. Current options Pascal Stenzel and Josha Vagnoman are reportedly not in their long-term plans. Both players’ contracts end after next season, and Stuttgart might sell them this summer.
The signing follows Stuttgart’s German Cup win, where they beat Arminia Bielefeld 4-2. Despite finishing ninth in the Bundesliga this season, their German Cup victory earned them qualification to a European competition. This has provided more funds for transfers like Assignon’s.
ASSIGNON’S CREDENTIALS
Assignon brings experience to Stuttgart. He scored 3 goals and 4 assists in 32 Ligue 1 games during the 2024/25 season. The French U-21 international also has Premier League experience. He was on loan at Burnley during the 2023/24 season under current Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany.
He is a versatile option for Stuttgart, having played further up the pitch as a right wingback or right midfielder. His flexibility could be useful as Stuttgart competes in domestic and European competitions.
WHAT NEXT FOR STUTTGART?
With Assignon’s deal done, Stuttgart can focus on strengthening their squad for their European campaign. The club’s ninth-place finish in the Bundesliga was underwhelming after their second-place finish last season.
Stuttgart hopes to make Assignon an important part of their team as they prepare for the new season. Several players have already left the club, including Woo-yeong Jeong and Luca Pfeiffer. The club also returned El Bilal Touré and Fabian Rieder to their parent clubs. More transfer activity is likely as coach Sebastian Hoeneß builds his squad for domestic and European challenges.
