Atlético Madrid Agree €50m Fee to Sign Álex Baena from Villarreal
Atlético Madrid have reached a full agreement to sign Álex Baena from Villarreal as he prepares to undergo a medical with the club.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Atléti were rivaling Juventus to secure Baena‘s signature but his representatives made it clear to Villarreal that he intended to remain in La Liga despite interest from the Serie A club. The 23-year-old was aiming for a transfer, and seems like he will be joining Simeone’s team for next season.
ANOTHER IMMINENT ARRIVAL
It’s been a busy transfer window for Simeone but on-loan defender Mina will be auctioned off and Baena is a direct replacement for the Senegalese star. The talented Spaniard won’t have to wait long to face his former club either as Atlético host Villarreal in the first game back after the international break in February.
THE TRANSFER DEAL
Los Colchoneros will pay an initial €20m to sign Baena, with a further €30m due in performance-related add-ons, meaning a potential total package worth €50m. Having already agreed personal terms with Baena, he will sign a five-year deal running through to 2031 upon completion of his medical.
