Atlético Madrid in Talks to Sign Renato Veiga from Chelsea

Atlético Madrid are talking with Chelsea to sign Portuguese defender Renato Veiga. The player wants to join the Spanish club, but Chelsea are asking for at least €40 million.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Atlético Madrid have started talks with Renato Veiga’s agents for a summer transfer. The 21-year-old wants to move after six months at Chelsea and a loan at Juventus. Chelsea bought Veiga from Basel for around £12.1 million in 2024 and now want at least €40 million from Atlético. The Spanish club are ready to negotiate and could reach a deal in the coming days.

WHY IS VEIGA ON THE MOVE?

Veiga did not get many chances at Chelsea, playing as a left-back or defensive midfielder for manager Enzo Maresca. He wants to be a centre-back, so he went on loan to Juventus, became a regular in their Serie A team and earned a call-up to Portugal’s UEFA Nations League squad. Veiga’s contract at Chelsea runs until 2031, but both he and the club are open to a transfer as he faces strong competition for a place in the team.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR ATLETICO AND CHELSEA?

Atlético Madrid finished third in the La Liga last season, and they want to improve their defense before the new campaign as they prepare for both domestic and Champions League competitions. Their next match is in early August. Chelsea recently won their first FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 but are struggling in the Premier League, so they may use the money from Veiga’s sale to strengthen other areas of the squad. Both clubs hope to complete the transfer soon, with Veiga looking to decide his future before the season starts.
