Axel Witsel Signs for Girona on Free Transfer After Atletico Madrid Exit

Girona have signed experienced Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel on a free transfer after he left Atletico Madrid. The 36-year-old signed a contract until 2026, with an option for an extra year.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Witsel moved to Girona to continue playing in La Liga after leaving Atletico Madrid this summer. The club announced the veteran midfielder will join their squad for the upcoming season, with a contract that could keep him there through 2027. Witsel played two seasons at Atletico, making over 90 appearances and being a regular in midfield last campaign.

GIRONA’S RISE AND WITSEL’S ROLE

Girona finished third in La Liga during the 2023-24 season, securing Champions League qualification for the first time, but last season struggled against relegation, and it finished in 16th place. Witsel is expected to bring much needed leadership and experience to a squad with young talent. His passing skills and calmness will help Girona improve their results and stay away from relegation worries. Last season at Atletico, Witsel played 37 league matches, scored twice, and helped the team finish fourth to reach the Champions League.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR GIRONA AND WITSEL?

Girona will begin their La Liga campaign this weekend against Rayo Vallecano, who were the last team to qualify for Europe last season and are tough opponents. The Catalan team will want to have a  strong start, and incorporate Witsel as soon as possible, to reach safety as early as possible in the season. With Witsel’s experience, Girona hope to manage a busy schedule while staying near the top of the league and try to reach the spots that will put the team back in Europe next season.
