Aymeric Laporte Seals Return to Athletic Club After FIFA Approval

Aymeric Laporte is back with Athletic Club after FIFA approved his transfer from Al Nassr. He’s now registered with La Liga and eligible for Athletic’s Champions League this season.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After waiting, FIFA finally decided Athletic Club could sign Aymeric Laporte. The Spanish player left Al Nassr after two years to return to Athletic. He first joined them seven and a half years ago before moving to Manchester City.

Initially, Athletic’s bid was rejected, but they proved they submitted the paperwork on time. FIFA accepted this, and Laporte is now registered for La Liga and the Champions League this season, with his transfer officially finalized.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This is a big gain for Athletic Club. Laporte played 222 games for them before leaving for England. Now at 31, he returns with experience from playing in England and Saudi Arabia. His arrival significantly strengthens Athletic’s defense, especially before matches against higher-placed rivals, enhancing their prospects in both domestic and European competitions.

Under Ernesto Valverde, Athletic are strong, chasing a top-four La Liga finish. They just secured Champions League qualification, having finished fourth in La Liga last season securing their spot. Laporte strengthens their defense as they aim for European success.

WHAT NEXT FOR ATHLETIC AND LAPORTE?

With Laporte registered, focus returns to playing. Athletic’s next match is against Alaves in La Liga before facing Arsenal in the Champions League. They’re currently top of the table, level on points with Real Madrid and only behind on goal difference.

Alaves are mid-table, but their form is unpredictable. Laporte might debut soon, aiming to aid their title chase and European journey, closing top-table gaps and becoming contenders.
