Aymeric Laporte Set for Dramatic Return to Athletic Club From Al Nassr
Aymeric Laporte is close to rejoining Athletic Club after they reached a deal with Al Nassr. Important documents were signed just in time for a Deadline Day reunion in Bilbao.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Athletic Club and Al Nassr agreed on Laporte’s transfer late on Deadline Day. Laporte will sign a three-year contract, returning to the club where he made his name. The 31-year-old played for Athletic from 2012 to 2018 before moving to Manchester City and then Al Nassr in 2023. Laporte hasn’t played for Al Nassr since April. The deal is finalized, making his return to La Liga this season possible, with reports indicating that Laporte is flying to Bilbao for a medical and to sign a three-year contract.
WHY IT MATTERS
This signing is a big move for Athletic Club. They can only sign players from the Basque region or Basque heritage, limiting their options. Laporte’s experience at top clubs and his performance in UEFA Euro 2024, where he played six of Spain’s seven matches, will be important. Athletic is currently at the top in La Liga nine points from three matches, alongside Real Madrid. The club is aiming for Champions League spots, having finished fourth last season to secure qualification.
WHAT NEXT FOR BILBAO AND LAPORTE?
Athletic Club’s next match is against Alaves in La Liga. Alaves is in 11th place, with 4 points from their three opening matches. Laporte’s arrival will strengthen Athletic’s defense, especially before matches against higher-placed rivals. For Laporte, a good season in Spain could help him return to the national team for the 2026 World Cup. Moving back to a more visible league may renew his international chances after recent missed call-ups.
