Barcelona have struck a deal with Tottenham Hotspur for the transfer of the South Korean international.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Son has scored some fantastic goals during his time with Spurs

The Daily Mail report that Son is on his way to the Catalan club, having agreed a three-year contract. The report claims he will be earning less than he was at Tottenham, but he will be joining for a transfer fee of £39 million after Barcelona increased their offer. Son will be the first signing for Barcelona as they show their intent to spend money in the transfer market and revamp the squad after another disappointing season.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

As well as Son, Barcelona are still pursuing a deal for Liverpool’s Luis Diaz, and are reportedly willing to fork out £60m for the Colombian, as they go for proven talent. This is a major shift away from the reliance on youth and young players that has backfired on the Spanish giants, though they also like Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri and want to sign him in the long-term.

WHAT’S NEXT BARCELONA?

If Barcelona are able to recruit Son and Diaz and add them to their attacking ranks, they would significantly improve what is currently available. Hansi Flick’s current options Luis Suarez and Jimmy-Jan Moens have performed well as the starting options in the forward ranks, but they are not at the level required to compete with Real Madrid. Flick will be hoping that the pursuit of the German coach by Paris Saint-Germain can be ended by proof that the club are finally serious about adding high-class players to the squad.
