Barcelona Extend Raphinha’s Contract Until 2028

Brazilian forward Raphinha will stay with FC Barcelona until June 2028, after signing a new contract.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Barcelona announced on Thursday that Raphinha has agreed to a contract extension through 2028. The Brazilian, who joined from Leeds United in 2022 for €58 million, signed the new deal after a great season with the LaLiga champions. His extension comes a day after manager Hansi Flick renewed his contract until 2027, showing Barcelona’s commitment to stability with both players and staff.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Raphinha’s extension follows an excellent season where he played a key role in Barcelona’s domestic treble win. He scored 34 goals and contributed 22 assists in 56 appearances in all competitions. His performances helped Barcelona clinch the LaLiga title, showcasing his improvement compared to his first two seasons where he started just 42 out of 76 matches and was a substitute 11 times.

Barcelona sporting director Deco, who has known Raphinha for many years, expressed his happiness with the player’s development: “His first year was very good and the second was a little down, but this season he’s been spectacular.” Deco also revealed that despite previous rumors about leaving, Raphinha “never wanted to leave” and showed “200% commitment” to the club.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR BARCELONA?

After Raphinha’s contract extension, Barcelona are also working on extending contracts for other key players. Sporting director Deco confirmed that Frenkie de Jong and Eric García, both with contracts until 2026, are next in line for an extension. Talks are also ongoing to improve young star Lamine Yamal’s terms when he turns 18. Barcelona currently lead LaLiga and will aim to build on their domestic treble success next season with Raphinha as a key player in attack.

With the Brazilian now signed long-term and showing his best form, Barcelona fans can expect more of his attacking skills as the club aims to continue their dominance in Spanish football and compete for the Champions League in the coming seasons.
