Barcelona Secure Hansi Flick Until 2027 After Historic Debut Season
Barcelona have extended Hansi Flick’s contract until 2027. This comes after a great first season where the team reclaimed its spot as the top club in Spain.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Hansi Flick has signed a new deal with Barcelona that runs until June 2027. The German coach, who is 60 years old, arrived at Barcelona’s offices on Wednesday to sign the extension. He did so alongside president Joan Laporta, first vice president Rafa Yuste, and sporting director Deco. Flick’s original deal was due to expire in 2026. But his fantastic performance in his first season made the Barcelona board want to keep him for an extra year.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Flick has transformed Barcelona, taking them from a trophy-less team to winners of a domestic treble. Under his leadership, Barcelona have won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup this season. They have also made strides in Europe, reaching the Champions League semifinals for the first time since 2019. They were eventually knocked out by Inter Milan after extra time.
Flick’s record at Barcelona shows his influence. With 43 wins, 7 draws, and 9 defeats in his first 59 games, Flick has the third-best record of any Barcelona coach after 60 games. Only Luis Enrique and Helenio Herrera have done better. Barcelona’s last game of their impressive season is against Athletic Club in Bilbao on Sunday. They currently sit at the top of La Liga with a comfortable lead over their rivals.
FLICK’S PHILOSOPHY
Despite his achievements, Flick has taken a cautious attitude towards long-term contracts. In April, he told reporters that he prefers shorter deals, saying: “I am not a coach who wants to sign a contract for three years. We are just starting this project and at this level it’s fantastic to stay, but I go year by year.” This approach reflects his deliberate strategy for developing the team’s future.
Flick’s attacking style has energized Barcelona. Players such as Raphinha and Lewandowski have found form again, young talent Lamine Yamal is emerging as a star, and Pedri is delivering consistent performances. The team’s defense has also improved, with Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez, as well as Kounde and Balde, forming solid partnerships at the back.
WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA?
After their final La Liga game against Athletic Club on Sunday, Barcelona players can enjoy a longer summer break. The team is not involved in the upcoming Club World Cup, giving Flick extra time to further develop his strategy and incorporate any new recruits before the 2025-26 season.
With Flick’s contract now extended, Barcelona aim to build on their domestic success and pursue Champions League glory next season. The stability from Flick’s extension shows Barcelona’s belief in his ability to keep them competitive against Real Madrid and other rivals both in Spain and in Europe.
