Barcelona Set to Extend Szczesny’s Contract Until 2027

Barcelona plan to extend Wojciech Szczesny’s contract to June 2027. They have already agreed with the Polish goalkeeper. The paperwork is still in progress, but both sides understand and agree on the main terms.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Barcelona want to keep Szczesny for two more seasons. He joined on a one-year contract after Marc-André ter Stegen was injured. Szczesny’s great performances led to this longer offer. The new deal might be a one-year contract with an option for a second year. Szczesny could leave in 2026 if he wants to.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Barcelona chose to extend Szczesny’s contract during big changes in their goalkeeping department. They plan to buy Joan García from Espanyol by paying his €25 million release clause next week. This move doesn’t change their plans for Szczesny. They value his experience and want to keep him on the team with ter Stegen and García.

President Joan Laporta sees Szczesny’s experience as vital for the team. He stresses the need for veteran players. Szczesny’s wife helped him decide, as he was retired when Barcelona called him last year.

WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA?

With the goalkeeping decision made, Barcelona can address other parts of their squad for the new season. The club is in a transition under Flick. Changes to the coaching staff, such as Tony Tapalovic’s arrival, could affect player decisions.

The announcement of Szczesny’s new contract is expected soon, after finalizing details. With Joan García joining, Barcelona shows commitment to building a skilled goalkeeping team. They’re balancing experience and youth as they compete in various competitions.
