Barcelona Win La Liga for 28th Time
Barcelona have won the La Liga title for the 2024/2025 season. They claimed their 28th league title with a 2-0 win over Espanyol in the Catalan derby.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Barcelona won the title with two games to spare by beating Espanyol 2-0 away from home. 17-year-old Lamine Yamal scored a stunning goal from outside the box to break the deadlock after the break. Yamal was involved again when Espanyol’s Leandro Cabrera received a red card for a foul on him 10 minutes from time. Yamal then set up Fermin Lopez to double the lead in added time. Barcelona’s victory ended Real Madrid’s reign as champions and sealed a league and cup double for coach Hansi Flick, following last month’s win over Real in the Copa del Rey final.
THE SEASON IN CONTEXT
Barcelona’s campaign has been a success under new management. Although they suffered a painful UEFA Champions League semifinal exit to Inter, they were too strong at home. They kept their title rivals at bay and managed to lift the league trophy with two matches to go. Some of the youngsters from the club’s La Masia academy, such as Yamal and Lopez, have stepped up to thrill the supporters, giving them hope for the future. Barcelona now have 28 gears to their name, although they are still some way behind Real on 36. But this season represents a return to the top of the domestic game as the club tries to rebuild.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR BARCELONA?
With the title wrapped up, Barcelona turn their attention to their two remaining games in La Liga: Villarreal visit this Sunday, followed by a trip to Athletic Club the next weekend. This gives the team the chance to rotate their ranks and enjoy a title party with the fans. The title race is over, as Villarreal and Athletic are mid-table and cannot challenge the champions. The club will look to relax and take stock of their campaign in preparation for the summer transfer window and next pre-season with an eye on improving their squad to take on Europe again next year.
