Bayer Leverkusen Target Jarell Quansah as Key Defensive Signing

Bayer Leverkusen are talking with Liverpool about signing young defender Jarell Quansah. The 22-year-old is their main target to strengthen the defense for the new Bundesliga season.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Leverkusen want Quansah to replace Jonathan Tah, who joined Bayern Munich. Talks are ongoing, and Quansah’s price is about £30 million. He played 25 times for Liverpool last season, starting in 13 games. He helped them win the Premier League. Quansah is seen as a future star, and Leverkusen believe they can sign him soon.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Leverkusen had a strong season ending second in the Bundesliga, three points behind champions Bayern Munich. With Tah and Mario Hermoso gone, they’re rebuilding under new manager Erik ten Hag. They have tough matches in the Bundesliga and Champions League and need a strong squad again to compete for trophies. Quansah signed a new deal with Liverpool in October 2023, but Leverkusen like his development and are also monitoring other defenders like Loïc Badé and Malick Thiaw.

WHAT NEXT?

As negotiations are ongoing, Leverkusen are getting ready for pre-season and hope to sign new players soon. Liverpool may lose Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konaté, making their defensive situation uncertain. For Quansah, the chances of regular play in Germany is appealing. Leverkusen’s first league match of the 2025/26 season is against Union Berlin, and the club want their new defender in place before the match.
