Bernardo Silva Named New Manchester City Captain

Manchester City have named Bernardo Silva as their new captain for the 2025/26 season. The Portuguese midfielder will stay at the club for at least another year, ending recent speculation over his future.

WHAT HAPPENED?

City announced on Wednesday that Silva has been named captain for the upcoming campaign. Speaking at a press conference, Silva looked ahead to his future, saying: “This season for sure will be at City, I’m going to stay. I’ve had options in the past and this year, like last, my option is to stay.” Silva’s appointment ends suggestions that the 30-year-old could leave the club and earn lucrative sums away from the Etihad Stadium. He has been widely praised by Pep Guardiola and supporters for his leadership, making him a natural candidate for the captaincy.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Silva’s appointment marks continuity and ambition at City. The midfielder was one of their most important players last season, making more than 40 appearances and scoring and assisting goals. His consistency and versatility helped City secure a second-place finish, although they narrowly missed out on lifting the title to Arsenal. Silva’s long-term future remains unclear, but his leadership will be critical as his team attempt to defend their crown and aim for European glory.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR CITY AND SILVA?

City start their new era with Silva at the wheel as they aim to regain the Premier League title and challenge for the Champions League after falling short at the semi-final stage last year. Their first game of the new campaign is against newly-promoted Sunderland, who finished second in the Championship. City are expected to be strong contenders again, with Silva’s leadership key amid their ongoing rivalries with Arsenal and Liverpool in the title race.
