Manchester United got good news before their Europa League semifinal against Athletic Club. Amad Diallo is back in training after a long injury break.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The 22-year-old player from Ivory Coast joined his teammates at Carrington on Wednesday. He was out for almost three months due to an ankle injury in February. Matthijs de Ligt also returned to training the same day. This gives manager Ruben Amorim more choices before important games. Amad’s comeback is faster than expected. It was earlier thought he would miss the rest of the season, but he recovered quickly.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Amad’s return is great for Manchester United’s attack as they get ready for the semifinal first leg against Athletic Club at San Mames on Thursday. Amad has been a key player this season even with his time off. He has nine goals and eight assists in all competitions and is United’s third-highest scorer. The team missed his creativity and attack during tough times. They have only had one clean sheet in the last three months.
WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?
Though Amad is back training, he might not start against Athletic Club in the first leg. He could travel with the team to Spain and might play in the second leg on May 8. His return boosts United’s attack for the important final weeks of the season as they continue in the Europa League. If they beat Athletic Club, they will face either Tottenham Hotspur or Bodo/Glimt in the final on May 21. In the Premier League, United want to do better, but Amorim said he is now focusing more on the Europa League than domestic games.
