Borja Sainz to Sign Five-Year Contract with FC Porto

Spanish forward Borja Sainz is set to join FC Porto on a five-year deal until June 2030. This move is part of the Portuguese club’s summer rebuild. Documents are expected to be signed by the end of this week, completing his switch from Norwich City.

WHAT LED TO THE MOVE?

Sainz scored 19 goals and provided 4 assists in 43 games for Norwich City, attracting strong interest from FC Porto. Porto’s initial bid was rejected, but they succeeded with an improved offer of £14.25 million, including performance-related add-ons. Norwich also negotiated a small sell-on clause as part of the agreement. Sainz had only one year left on his Norwich contract and wanted to take the next step in his career. He joins a new-look Porto squad under head coach Francesco Farioli, alongside fellow Spaniards Gabri Veiga, Samu, and Ángel Alarcon.

According to a previous report, FC Porto appointed Francesco Farioli as head coach after the departure of Martín Anselmi.

WHY THIS TRANSFER MATTERS

FC Porto finished last season in third place, seven points behind champions Sporting CP and four behind rivals Benfica. The club aims to challenge for the title and strengthen its attack after scoring fewer goals than the top two competitors. Sainz, the Championship’s second-highest scorer last season, brings much-needed firepower as Porto look to close the gap. Meanwhile, Norwich City, who ended last season in the lower half of the Championship table, now face the challenge of replacing their top scorer for the upcoming campaign.

FC Porto finished third in the 2024/25 Primeira Liga season, as confirmed by a previous report.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR PORTO AND SAINZ?

Sainz will undergo a medical before officially being unveiled as a Porto player. Pre-season preparations are already underway as Porto gear up for their first Primeira Liga match against Rio Ave, who finished 14th last term. Porto will keep an eye on their title rivals, with Sporting CP and Benfica both reinforcing their squads over the summer. For Sainz, the move provides a chance to play in European competitions and showcase his talent on a bigger stage, while Porto will hope his arrival sparks a more successful title chase this season.
